FOOTBALL NOTES.
(By All-Blank.) The following are the positions of the teams competing in the Wairarapa Rugby Union's Senior and Junior competitions
The Wairarapa Thursday Kugby Union's fixtures for to-morrow are as follow: Senior: Eketahuna v. Rover B, at Masterton; referee, Mr A. Millar. Albion v. Liberal, at Carterton; referee, Mr E. McKenzie. Junior: Eketahuna v. Liberal, at Featherston. The match at Carterton, on Saturday last, between the Carterton and Red Star Seniors was the most interesting game that has been played at Carterton this season. It was generally conceded that Red Star would give their opponents a hard battle, but that the Carterton forwards would prove too strong for the Northerners. Not only did the Stars give Carterton a good game, but their forwards were too good for the maroon pack. In the second spell there was only one foward team in it, and that was the black and white vanguard. The Star pack are improving with every match, and it can be safely claimed that they have now the best pack of forwards in the Wairarapa. They will probably be Strengthened shortly by the inclusion of anpther Wellington representative forward, who may come to reside in Masttrton within a week or so. As usual the Stars lost the toss, and played with the sun in their faces in the first spell. For a quarter of an hoiir they set up a determined attack. Good kicking by E. McKenzie and fast following up by Henderson and H. McKenzie shifted play to the centre. Serviceable kicking by the Carterton backs removed play to the Star territory, and for some time the visitors were busy defending. Eventually Scorrar, Todd, Chambers and Du Blois removed play to the centre. Carterton returned to the attack, and nearly missed scoring on one or two occasions, but good work by the Star forwards cleared the line. The rest of the spell was evenly contested. Supporters of the Carterton team were confident that in the second spell the local pack would "wear" the visitors' forwards down. But those who had seen the Star pack play against Mastarton held a different oyinion. The spell proved the latter to be right in their surmise, A particular i feature of the spell was the brilliant rushes by the Star forwards, Todd, Scorrar, Collett, Clarke, Du Blois, Chambers and Corbatt in turn, heading attacks on the maroons' line. About a quarter of , an hour before the call of time the efforts of the Stars were rewarded by McLachlan scoring a splendid try after a good run. Wrigley converted. Stars continued to attack, uhtil a few minutes before time, when Carterton rushed the ball down to the Star line, and Kellop was awarded a try, which E. McKenzie converted. The score should not have been allowed, aa the ball went out of bounds and the line umpire held his flag up. The game thus ended In a draw. Scorrar played a brilliant game on the wing for the Stars, and beat his opponent time after time. Scorrar's smothering tactics were a source of trouble to the Carterton backs, and he repeatedly headed rushes to the Carterton line. Chambers, on the other wing, put in smart work, and -when he strikes form will be a decided acquisition to the Star team. The other forwards all played well. Todd was perhaps the most noticeable and the others ably assisted him. Du Blois put in particularly good work in " tight" corners. Wrigley was the best back on the ground. Adams put in capital work, , and Marsh also played well. Walker was safe at full back and kicked well. E. McKenzie, Thompson and Kellop were the pick of the Carterton backs, the former's kicking being of the utmost service to his team. H. McKenzie was the best of the Carterton forwards, and he was well supported by Henderson, 1 Judd, S. Mason and Armstrong. No less than six ex-Petone and exMelrose players took part in the Car-terton-Red Star match on Saturday last. The ex-Petone players were E. McKenzie, A. Chambers (Wellington representative), and A. Judd (Wellington representative). Ihe exMelrose players were Groube, Adams and Du Blois '(Wellington representative). The Red Star - Carterton match was played in a very friendly spirit, and there was a total , absence of rough play.
