DISCONTENT IN THE SOUTH OF FRANCE.

The arrest of M. Albert, one of the leaders of the wine revolt, has not been confirmed.
Tho Wine-growers' Defence Com* mittee has issued a placard stating that it will cease demonstrations, owing to the disturbances. The Republican Committee of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture, has postponed till Monday the banquet to Sir Wilfrid Laurier, Prime Minister of Canada.
All public engagements of the French Ministers, either in Pari3 or in the provinces, have been cancelled.
DISAFFECTED AREAS CALMER
Received June 24, 9.15 a.m. PARIS, June 23. It is officially announced that the disaffected areas are calmer.
The Chamber of Deputies hurriedly passed a Bill preventing the adulteration of wines, which is at the root of the troubles.
The Agde mutineers have resumed work. They appear heartily sorry for their escapade.

Several thousand peasants at Var met and urged the municipalities of Var, which M. Clemenceau (the
Premier) represents in the Senate, to resign. THE PREMIER AND M. ALBERT. Received June 24, 9.55 p.m. PARIS, June 24. Amazement has been caused in Paris by M. Albert obtaining a short interview with M. Clemenceau. The Premier spoke very severely and harshly, whereupon M., Albert expressed contrition for the part he had taken in the disturbance, and urged the release of M. Ferroul and others, and also the withdrawal of troops. M. Albert added that quiat would then be restored. M. Clemenceau replied that there was only one thing to do —submit to the law. He added: "Go away and surrender yourself a prisoner." M. Albert then started to return to the South.
