FOOTBALL.
SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP. CARTERTON v. RED STAR. A match was played, at Carterton, on Saturday afternoon, between the Carterton and Red Star seniors, and resulted in a draw, each side scoring five points. The game was a very interesting one. ' The first spell was evenly contested, and there was no score. In the second spell the superiority of the Red Star forwards soon became evident, and Carterton were for the most part defending. The visitors forwards beat the local forwards in nearly all departments of the game. Fine work by Todd, Scorrar, Du Blois, Collett, Corbett and Chambers, nearly resulted in a score on several occasions. The first try of the match was scored for the Red Stars by McLachlan after a fine piece of forward work. Wrigley converted the try. Just on the call of time Carterton scored a try, which was converted. The game thus ended in a draw. Red Stars had the best of the game, and the fine stand they made was in a large measure due to the forwards. Scorrar played a brilliant game on the wing, and Chambers on the other wing did'some smart work. The pack played a "hard game, Todd, Du Blois, McLachlan, Collett and Corbett doing excellent work, while Clarke and Wickens shone out in the loose. Walker was safe at full-back, and once saved a certain score by his sure tackling. Wrigley was the best back on the ground, and he was ably assisted by Adams and Marsh. E. McKenzie and Thompson were the pick of the Carterton backs, and of the forwards McKenzie, S. Mason, Judd and Armstrong did good work. Mr L. Williams was referee.
JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP. ' RED STAR v. MASTERTON. The unexpected happened when the Masterton and Red Stars Juniors met on the Showgrounds, on Saturday afternoon. It was generally supposed thatjthe" game would be a "good go," but that Masterton would win. Stars, however, outclassed their opponents in all departments of the game, and secured a substantial victory. The game was fast and interesting from the kick-off. Masteron won the toss, and Red Star played, in the first spell, with the sun in their faces. Soon after commencing Wing sent the ball to Biggins, who passed to Bannister, but th» latter failed to take the ball. Star forwards took play into Masterton 2i>, where Holmes took a mark and temporarily relieved. Stars soon got going again, and Wing passed to Bannister, who crossed the line. Bannister failed to convert. When the ball was again in play, Daniell immediately made a fine run from the quarter-way flag, with the ball at his toe, and scored between the posts. Cook converted. Stars returned to the attack, and Phillips missing the ball, enabled Wing to score. Bannister failed with the kick. Solid work by the forwards on both sides, and occasional back play, filled in the rest of the spell, and the whistle sounded for half-time with Masterton attacking, and the scoresRed Star 6 Masterton ... ... 5 On resuming, Bannister made a good run and nearly reached the Masterton lihe, where he was held up. A penalty kick cleared the Masterton
line. Good footwork, in which Hanley and Daniell were prominent, transferred the struggle to Star territory, but a free kick brought relief. Masterton continued to attack, and Stars were forced down. The ball was not long in motion again when Bannister kicked it over Masterton's line, and Phillips missing it, Wing followed up and scored. Wing failed with the kick. Masterton forwards then took play to Star territory, Daniell being prominent in an assault on Star's line. Holmes made a dash for the line, and passed to Jackson, who fell and passed off the ground, for which a penalty was awarded. The Masterton pack again attacked, and the Stars were forced down. On resuming, Stars attacked, and Welch scored after a good run. Diggins failed to convert. The game ended with play in midfield, the scores being— S Red Star 12 Masterton 5 The, Star team was a good allround combination, and there is no doubt that the best team won. The forwards were always on the ball. McKeiuie played a good game on the wing, and Langstone, Langley and Ross showed up well in the pack. Wing was undoubtedly the best back on the ground. He used his head well, and showed considerable pace. Diggins and Ball also put in some good work. Flaws was a safe fullback. The Masterton team did not play up to their usual form, except in'one or two instances. Hanley and Daniell (wings) were the best forwards in the team, and their allround play was excellent. They I headed some good rushes. The other ! forwards did not show up well. Holmes was the only back who was prominent, and he put in some useful work. Latimer was the best of the others. Mr J. McKenzie was referee.
The Masterton schoolboys defeated Carterton [ schoolboys, at Carterton, on Saturday, by 11 points to nil. By Telegraph—Press Association/ DUNEDIN, June 22. The results of (the football matches on Saturday were as follow :--Kaikorai and Alhambra, a draw—no score; Port Chalmers beat ZingariRichmond by 6 points to 0; Pirates beat Taieri Rovers by 9to 5; University beat Union by 35 to 3, Southern beat Dunedin by 4 to 3. AUCKLAND, June 23. In the senior football, on Saturday, Grafton and Parnell played a draw, 8 points each; Newton defeated North Shore by 5 points to nil; City and Ponsonby played a draw, neither side scoring. City thus wins the championship with eight matches played, seven wins, and a draw. Ponsonby is next with six wins, one loss, and a draw. CHRISTCHURCH, June 23. The results of the senior football matches are as follow:—Chnstchurch beat Old Boys by 28 to 9; Albion beat Canterbury College by 12 to 8; Sydenham beat Linwood by 6 to 0. WELLINGTON, June 23. Yesterday's senior Rubgy matches resulted as follow:—Melrose beat Petuneby3to nil; Poneke defeated Victoria College by 55 to nil; Old Boys beat St. James by 7 to 3; Athletic beat Wellington by 21 to nil. WANGANUI, June 23.
The annual football match between the Wanganui Collegiate School and Te Aute t took place, on Saturday afternoon, in beautiful weather. {the game was one of the hardest seen here, and excitement ran high. Te Aute were superior in the forward division, especially in the matter of weight. The Wanganui backs, however, were much the better. The game was won by Te Aute, the scores being 10 to 6. Fop the visitors Heke and Tamati scored .the tries, both being converted. For Wanganui Tonks scored, and Hitchings kicked a penalty goal.
