FOUND DROWNED.
DEATH OP A WELL-KNOWN FARMER.
Yesterday morning Mr Hugh Welch, farmer, of Opaki, was found drowned in the Ruamahanga River, which runs through his farm. The deceased was seen by his wife at about 7 o'clock yesterday morning. He then went out, and he was last seen about a quarter of an hour later by a lad named Drake, in the rear of the farmhouse. As the deceased did not put in an appearance for breakfast, a search was made with the result that his body was found, about 10 o'clock, in the river in about three feet of water, by James Trembath, one of the farm hands. The point where the body was found is about 200 yards or 300 yards distant from the house.
The late Mr Welch was 35 years of age, and had resided in the district as a farmer for a number of years. He was highly respected by all who knew him, and took a keen interest in sport generally. A widow and two children, aged 10 years and 7 years, respectively, are left to mourn their loss, and they will have the sympathy of a large circle of friends. An inquest will be held to-day.
