MELBOURNE, June 22. Affairs in connection with the mail contract remain in abeyance'pending Mr Deakin's arrival. It is reported that Mr Deakin brings with him ' draft agreement with the White Star. Line to carry the mails to Australia. LONDON, June 21. The Orient Royal Mail Company's new steamer Asteria carries the last mails to Australia under the expiring contract.

THE EASTERN SERVICE

MELBOURNE, June 22,

The State Minister of Agriculture cannot understand the clamour about Victoria's action over the Singapore line of steamers. When tenders were called Messrs Burns, Philp and Co. asked for a subsidy twice the amount of that being paid. Victoria, the Minister says, would never have thought of paying a subsidy if it could get equal terms with Sydney and Adelaide.

STATEMENT BY HOWARD SMITH'S REPRESENTATIVE.

MELBOURNE, June 22

With reference to the cable message regarding the new Pacific service, Messrs Howard Smith's representative explains that his firm is not acting as a principal with Andrew Weir's new Pacific service, but only as Australian agents. It will be essentially a cargo, not a mail service, though by arrangement with the United States Government it will incidentally carry mails to Australia via New Zealand.

SCULLING CHAMPIONSHIP,

Received June 23, 4.46 p.m. SYDNEY, June 23,

Tressider defeated Thoroughgood for the sculling championship of Australia.

The race took place on the Hunter River, and was for £IOO aside in addition to the championship of Australia. Thoroughgood led for a mile, and afterwards kept Tressider (the holder) moving, but he was unable to overhaul him. The latter eventually won by half a length, in ISmin 1 9sec. Webb, the New Zealand sculler, and his trainer (Barnett) witnessed the race.

WRESTLING AND BOXING. Received June 23, 4.48 p.m. SYDNEY, June 23. The finals for the amateur championships resulted as follow:—Wrest-ling—Heavy-weight, Shepherd; lightweight, Rush; middle-weight, Schneider. Boxing—Light-weight, White; welter - weight, Burns; featherweight, Chapman; bantam-weight, Fenn; middleweight, Midwood (Tasmania) ; heavy-weight, Fitzpatrick.
