DEPARTMENT OF LABOUR.
The Journal of the Department of Labour for June contains the following with reference to Master ton, Tinui, and Greytown : MASTERTON. In' comparison'with the'same month of last year, trade and business generally show an improvement. The building trade continues good, and there is every prospect of it continuing so for some time to come. A great deal of wet weather has been experienced, and this has occasioned a serious loss of time to those employed out of doors. Building trade: Good in all branches. Coachbuilding: Trade only normal. Moulding: Local hands fully employed. Engineering: Moderate business only being done. General smithing: Hands making full time. Saddle and harness making: Good business reported during the past month. Furniture trade: Good steady business maintained. Tailoring trade: Good for this season of the year. Dressmaking: Slack; only moderate business reported. Retail trade: Good in all branches. Unskilled labour: During the period under review there has been no demand for unskilled labour; but later on, when works in contemplation are commenced, work will be more plentiful. Twelve applications for work have been received during the month. TINUI. Unskilled labour: Several local men havejjbeen idle during!,the month owing to the wet weather. A few swaggers came here during the month, but they had to return to Masterton owing to the flooded state of the rivers which prevented them from going on further where there was work. GREYTOWN. Building trades: Very busy at present. Unskilled labour: Local [labour is fully employed. There is a sufficient number of men in this district to meet the demand.
