CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

4—; MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Council of the Masterton Chamber of Commerce was held yesterday afternoon. There were present r-r-Messrs J. D. Cruickshank (chairman), J. C. Ewington, J. B. Keith, T. G. Mason and J. B. Moodie. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs M. Caselberg, D. Donald, ~.W. B. Chennells, E. E. Chamberlain and H. C. Robinson. The Treasurer reported a'credit balance of £3 16s 5± • The secretaries of the proposed new Technical School for Masterton wrote explaining the movement, and asking the Chamber for financial assistance. Mr Keith said he had no doubt that every member was in sympathy with and had subscribed to the movement. The Chamber had very little funds, and was not a body that should be asked to contribute money to such a movement. He moved that the Chamber regretted that it had no funds at its disposal to make a grant. Mr Moodie seconded the motion. The Chairman suggested that the matter should be held over until the end of the Chamber's financial year, so that it could be seen'what amount the Chamber had in hand. Mr Mason moved, as an amendment, that the sum of £5 5s be placed at the disposal of the Technical School 4 Committee at the end of the financial year. Th'e amendment was seconded by Mr Ewington, and after further discussion was carried. A letter was received from the Masterton - Waipukurau Railway League stating that the League was progressing favourably, branches having been established at Rakaunui, Horoeka and Waihi with a probability of branches being established at Waione, Weber and Waipukurau. It was decided to thank the League for the information. The Chairman stated that "the matter would be kept steadily in view."
