MASTERTON MOUNTED RIFLES.

ANNUAL BALL. The fourth military ball of the Masterton Mounted Rifles, held last evening in the Drill Hall, was a very brilliant function, and was a decided success socially and financially. There were nearly ninety couples present. Besides the members of the Mounted Rifles', there were representatives from / the Masterton Rifle Volunteers and other corps present, and the uniforms of the officers and men greatly enhanced the scene. The decorations eclipsed anything of the kind seen in Masterton for some time. The walls were hung with greens, mirrors, and pictures, and here and there the arms and accoutrements of the corps were artistically arranged., One end of the hall was tk furnished in drawing-room style, ■ even to the overmantles hung on the wall, while the platform was utilised as a card room. The floor had been the subject of special preparation and was in good order. The supper was arranged on tables in the Town Hall, and was in charge of Mr, W. Wilkes, who carried out the catering arrangements in a very elaborate style. Lieutenants Whittaker, and Cameron, Sergt.-Major Collier, and Sergeants Schofield, Welch and Barnes were the M's.C, and the music was supplied by an orchestra under Mr Reihana Boyes. A committee, consisting of the officers and non-commissioned officers offthe Corps, ably assisted by a ladies' committee, consisting of Mesdames P. R. Cook, E. Collier, B. Welch, J. M. Coradine and Miss McKillop, were responsible for the \arrangements for the dance, and they are to be congratulated upon the success of their efforts. A word of praise is also due to the corps' popular secretary, Trooper A. C. Williams, who was untiring in his efforts to make everything connected with the function a success.
