I MAJOR CUP. UNITED v. GREYTOWN. The United and Grey town teams met at Greytown, yesterday, and the former won by 5 goals to 1. The ground was very sloppy, and the game was practically a mud scramble. From the start of the game the United forwards set up an attack on their opponents' goal, and after a good deal of scrambling play, Baker scored a goal. The visitors again attacked, and from a smart corner hit Baker registered his second goal. The United continued to attack throughout the spell, and before half-time, Hooper, Wing and Tooby scored a goal each. In the second spell Greytown played a determined game. About half-way through the spell, they scored their first and only goal after a scramble in front of the posts. The United forwards played a splendid game, especially Hooper and Wing. Winter and Baker also played well. A feature of the match Was the playing of Rees and\ Denton, the full-backs. Nicol played a safe game. The pick of the Greytown team were Bunny, Humphries and Balfour. Mr W. J. Vernon was referee. W.F.C.A. v. KNOX. The W.F.C.A. and Knox, teams met at Lansdowne, yesterday, and a very uneven game resulted in a win for the former by 11 goals to nil. HUGHES SHIELD. HUIA v." GREYTOWN. Teams representing the Huia and ' Greytown Clubs met at Lansdowne, yesterday afternoon. The ground was very wet, and a portion of the game was played in heavy rain. Roberts, B. Dunn, M. Bey, C. Maguire and Z„ Humphries. As this was the first meeting of these teams this season, and the chance, of winning the Shield rested on its resuU to some extent, a very interesting game was expected. Greytown were considerably the stronger team, and thay won by five goals to nil. .The outstanding feature of the.match was the hitting; of the visitors. They hit vigorously'. The Huias might well take a lessOii from the visitors in this respect. From the "bully," Greytown attacked and carried the ball along the wing. The Huia backs were hard pressed, and made repeated efforts to relieve the situation. Every time the ball came out it was sent back by Miss Bicknell, who was hitting splendidly. A good hit by Miss E.. Barr relieved the. Huias. and play was transferred along the wing/ The pressure was only temporarily relieved, for the visitors returned to the attack with renewed vigour. Miss 0. Richards took the ball the other wing. A free hit brought the visitors down again, and several times the ball was hit over the line close to the posts. Miss Blomquist made a good hit at this stage, and Miss Barr carred the ball well along the * centre. Miss Z. Humphries returned and play remained about the , centre. Misses Barr and Richards put the visitors' goal in danger. The Greytown full-back, Miss Murray, saved splendidly. Misses Roberts and f McGuire brought the ball down the whole length of the field. Good play . by Miss Fuller saved a score. After the hit in, the visitors again attacked, but Miss R. Hooper smartly relieved, • and the visitors were forced back. Greytown attacked again, but Miss La Roche relieved. Miss Bey was prominent in an attack, and some exciting play was seen right under the Huias goal. Still the visitors failed to score. After some centre play, in which Misses Hooper, La Roche, Smith and Hester were yrom*inent for the home team, the visitors again attacked, and after forcing play up to the posts, Miss Roberts scored the first goal. Shortly afterwards Miss Bey, following up well, hit the second goal. The Huias worked the ball up, and when the whistle sounded they were attacking. For a considerable time after the start of the second spell play was about the centre, Misses Hooper and Richards being particularly prominent on the wings. The Huias were playing a better game than in the first half. Greytown repeatedly attacked, and in quick succession Misses' Z. Humphries, C. McGuire and E. Roberts scored a goal each. The play for the • rest of the spell was uninteresting. On the winning side the players were a very even lot, the most prominent being Misses Z. Humphries, E. Bicknell, M. Bey, C. Maguire and E. Roberts. Of the Huias Misses E. Barr, R. Hooper, 0. Richards, D. La Roche and M. Sutton were the pick. Mr S. A." Noble-Campbell was referee. GARRY OWEN v. GLENGARRY. The Garry Owen and Glengarry - teams met on the Showgrounds yesterday afternoon. The ground was * heavy owing to the rain, but a fast and interesting game was witnessed. The following, were the teams:— Garry Owen—Goalkeeper, Miss K. Hanley; fullbacks, Misses M. Collins
and M. Hourigan; halves, Misses R. Chapman and M. O'Toole;, forwards, Misses N. Coyle, M, Stempa, V. O'Connell, K. O'Leary, and A. , Stempa. Glengarry Goalkeeper, Miss J. Evans; fullbacks, Misses F. de Lisle and G. Gordon; halves, Misses P. Hood, I.'McKenzie, and A. De?onport; forwards, Misses A: Gardner, A. Pike, W. Logan, J. Scott and J. Deane. ; Garry Owen rushed the ball down into the Glengarry territory, where Misses O'Toole and K. O'Leary were associated in an attack on the Glengarry goal* Miss McKenzie cleared the" line, but fine play by Misses O'Leary. M. Stempa, and O'Toole placed Glengarry on the de-. fensive again. Miss Deane was conspicuous in removing play down the field, but Miss O'Leary, with a fine run, took the ball into the Glengarfy territory again. The Garry Owen forwards made a determined attack on the Glengarry goal, but the defence was too good. Misses Deane, McKenzie and Scott carried play to the centre, but, through the agency of Misses O'Leary, O'Toole and Coyle, the Garry Owens , attacked again. Misses de Lisle and Gordon [ cleared the line, and Miss Pike carried* the ball well down the field. Miss O'Leary removed play 10 the Glengarry territory, but Miss Pike was again conspicuous in taking play to the centre, where it remained for a time. Then a Garry 'Owen rush, headed by Misses O'Leary, O'Toole. Coyle and O'Connell, removed play to the Glengarry goal, where the Garry Owens nearly registered a score. The Garry Owens had the best of the play for the remainder of the spell. Garry Owens attacked on resum-' ing, but good play on 1 the part of Misses Deane, Pike, McKenzie and Hood placed the Garry Owens on the defensive. Miss Pike made a fine run to the Garry Owen goal, but was unsupported, and Misses O'Toole, O'Leary and Collins;removed play to the centre. Another fine run by Miss Pike took play into the Garry Owen territory again, but Miss O'Leary removed play to the centre. Not to be denied, Glengarry, headed by Misses Deane, Pike, Logan and Hood, returned to the attack, but the Garry Owen forwards cleared the line. Misses O'Leary, O'Toole and M. Stempa removed play to the Glengarry goal, and some exciting play resulted. Garry Owen made a determined attack on the Glengarry goal time after time, but the defence was too good, Misses McKenzie, Deane and Pike being conspicuous for good work.* Garry Owen kept the Glengarrys on the defensive for the rest of the game, and nearly scored on several occasions. The game ended without any score being registered by either side. Mr F. Richards was referee.. ' The game was fast and interesting, and some good individual play was witnessed. Both teams lacked com- x bination, and had Misses O'Leary and Pike been better supported at times by their respective teams, scores would probably have been registered. Garry Owen had considerably the best of the game,! but Glengarry showed excellent defence and prevented their opponents from scoring. Garry Owen played all through with ten players, but matters were equalised in the second spell when one of the Glengarry players was. injured and retired. Miss O'Leary stood out as the best forward in* the Garry Owen . team, and' her play all through was capital. Misses Coyle and M. Stempa Nvere perhaps the best of the others, but all of ,them played a, good game. The backs had little 'to do. Miss O'Toole was seen (to the most advantage and put in- some clever work. The others did their work well. Misses Deane and Pike were the pick of the Glengarry forwards, and played splendidly all through. Miss Logan gained a lot of ground by her runs, and played well, while Mi&ses Scott and Gardner also put in good work. / Of i the backs, Misses McKenzie, Hood! and Gordon were perhaps the best. ■'■ t HIGH SCHOOL v. HINEMOA. The Masterton High School and Hinemoa (Carterton) teams, met on the Schoolground, yesterday after-' | roon, when the High School won by three goals to nil.
