DISCONTENT IN SOUTH OF FRANCE
EXTRAORDINARY SCENES. Received June- 20, 7.27 a.m. ; PARIS, June 19. Extraordinary scenes occurred in Narbonne late last night. The Tocsin* sounded in the Town Hall, and people poured into the streets and began to erect barricades., Mi Ferroul, an ex-Mayor, whose' arrest had been ordered, , stopped I them, saying:-"We want no barri- / cades. I surrender myself to justice. "We want no bloodshed." He ,then summoned them to destroy the barricades, and himself pet the example. The people obeyed, and the barricades were removed. -SELF-GOVERNMENT AIMED AT. i MILITARY MOVEMENTS. Received June 20, 7.27 a.m/ PARIS, June 19. There are indications that the committees in the disaffected depart- * meats sought to establish a confederSfcton, with M. Albert as president, oping to obtain an auto constitution. Trains full of troops moved about changing garrisons, yesterday, retnoVing to a distance troops recruited •from among the southern population. *' Ml .. - NARBONNE OCCUPIED BY TROOPS. ARREST OF MALCONTENTS. Received June 20, 8.32 a.m. PARIS, June 19. Troops occupy Narbonne. M. Ferroul, ex-Mayor, was arrested without disturbance. -. ' Detectives with a military escort went to Argellieas to arrest M. Albert and five others. They arrested three, but failed to find M, Albert. ( Received Jtine 20, 9.25 p.m. PARIS,-June 20. Serious rioting occurred at Nar-: *4* toe at night. A crowd, which' consisted partly of peasants, emptied a cart of paraffin over the door,j of a wine manufacturer and then attempted to ignite it, but were repulsed by soldiers stationed in the courtyard. The demonstrators tried to enter through the gardens, but the troops charged the crowd repeatedly. It was an hour and a half before , they succeeded in dispersing the rioters. Some of the gendarmes werewounded. ' The troops at Mont Pelier scattered * crowd which had collected outside the prison cheering M. Ferroul. M. Clemenceau's latest despatches show that tranquility in the South has been restored. ! Received June 20, 9.33 p.m. PARIS, June 20. A crowd at Narbonne surrounded M. Ferroul's carriage, and hissed the -: troops escorting him to the station. the infantry fixed bayonets and the cavalry dispersed the demonstrators.
