The committee, under the chairmanship of Lord Farrer, which was appointed to enquire into the practicability and desirability of the Post Office providing, in connection with the Savings Bank, for the insurance of employers against liabilities under the Workmen's Compensation Act, reports that it is undesirable for the State to embark in insurance schemes. The committee deprecates haste in the matter. DISAFFECTION IN IRELAND. Received June 20, 7.27 a.m. LONDON June 19. In the House of Commons Mr Birrell, Chief Secretary for Ireland, in reply to a question, announced :; . that it was intended to prosecute .Mr P. Kelly, the Irish magistrate, in" connection with his recent speech at Galway. (In the speech referred to Mr Kelly declared, according to a statement, made <■ in the House of Commons, that ifi Lord Ashtown, a local landlord, who is under constant stict police protection, lived at Killane, or Loughrea (two other Galway towns), he would have been on a stretcher long ago. the same as John Blake. Blake was shot dead in 1883. The magistrate added that the men of Woodlawn (in northeast Galway) lacked ;the courage and manliness to treat Lord Ashtown as , he should be treated.) ! SUEZ CANAL SHARES. Received June 20, 8.43 a.m. LONDON. June 19. Mr Asquith, Chancellor of the Exchequer, replying in the House of Commons to a question by Sir Howard Vincent, said that the Government had not considered the desirability of offering Suez Canal Shares to the Governments of Australia. New Zealand, India and Natal at the market rate in propo-tion to their-in-terest in the canal. He did not think the suggestion practicable. TORPEDO BOAT SINKS. Received June 20,11.12 p.nu LONDON, June 20. Owing to the breakage of the stern shaft the torpedo boat No. 99 sank off Berry Head, Devonshire. The torpedo gunboat Dryad rescued the crew. / ROYAL HUNT CUP. Received June 20,11.12 p.m. 'At Ascot the Royal Hunt Cup was won by Lally, 'with Andover second and Malua third.
