THE FIRE ON THE VARZIN. i 1 Received June 19, 9.12 a.m. SYDNEY. June 19. Several of the plates of the German steamer Varzin, on which an outbreak of fire occurred, are budded, but the vessel is seaworthy. Repairs will be effected on her reaching Hamburg. SENTENCE COMMUTED. Received June 19, 9.51 a.m. SYDNEY, June 19. The sentence on Richard Riley for the murder of Rose Arnold has been commuted to imprisonment for life. (The circumstances in this case are peculiar, Riley having been tried twice for the offence. He killed Rose Arnold, a barmaid, on March 26th, last year, was sentenced to death in May, and in June declared to be insane and placed in an asylum. Medical evidence having shown that Riley was suffering from delusional mania, and had recently recovered his sanity, he was again placed on trial a fortnight ago. found guilty and sentenced to death.) SYDNEY COAL LUMPERS' STRIKE. Received June 19, 8.30 a.m. SYDNEY, June 19. The coal-lumpers make another appeal through the press for their fel-low-unionists to strike. SYDNEY WOOL SALES. Received June 20, 12.37 a.m. SYDNEY, June 19. The final sales of the current wool year were commenced to-day. Competition was eood, and last month's rates were maintained.
