MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
WORKS COMMITTEE. The Works Committee of the Masterton Borough Council met last levelling, there being present:—Crs W. Pragnell (chairman), J. Prentice, W. Morris and A. Haughey. An apology for absence was received from Cr J. H. Pauling. The Engineer reported that the estimated cost of the work of removing the fences to widen Makora Road to one chain would be £149 8s 3d. It was decided to recommend the Council to place the amount required on this year's estimates. Mr W. G. Lamb waited on the Committee, and complained of the state of Solway Street near his vineyard. He stated that the road was almost impassable. The Engineer was instructed to put gravel on the road at the locality mentioned. It was decided that the footpaths on both sides of Park Street (late Cross Street) should be nine feet wide. The Committee decided to recommend the Council to forego ihe claim against Chamberlain and Sons for culverts in consideration of the latter having allowed the diversion of the Albert Street Creek along the water tables in front of their mill. It was decided that the Engineer should submit a report regarding the filling up of the drain in South Road; that the question of grading Queen Street in accordance with the Engineer's report, be referred to the Council as a matter of urgency; that the Engineer be instructed to put a few loads of gravel in Queen Street near Mr J. S. Alpass' shop; that Crs Prentice, Pragnell and Morris be appointed to interview owners of "property in Villa Street with reference to widening that street, also to interview property I owners in Villa and Bentley Streets I in connection with the laying of | drainage pipes through their property; that the Council be recommended to form about 16 chains of footpath on the south side of Renall Street from Chapel Street westwards, and abojt 24 chains on the north side; that plans be prepared and tenders called for metalling in Villa Street; that the Engineer be instructed to proceed with the metalling of Chapel Street, and the construction of a culvert near the Fish Ponds; that tenders be called for work in Church Street extension; that the footpath on the east side of Colombo Road, from Johnston St. to Bannister Street, be proceeded with out of loan money; that the question of improving the road at the Kuripuni Triangle be left to the Engineer and Cr Morris: that the Engineer submit a report of the cost of a footpath in Archer Street: that the resolution of the Finance Committee with regard to the cost of maintenance be referred back to that Committee for an explanation. The Engineer was instructed lo carry out the recommendation of the Manager of the Abattoir for the erection of three additional pens for sheep and pigs, and the erection of a small shed. It was decided to recommend the Council to purchase a small safe for keeping the office books in at the Abattoir.
