Received June 18, 2.12 p.m. LONDON, June 17. John Brown and Company, of Sheffield and Clydebank, are amalgamating with Harland and Wolff, of Belfast. This will be the largest shipbuilding firm in the world. The wages bill will totai £2,350,000 annually. PRICE OF SILVER. Received June 18, 1.39 p.m. LONDON, June 17. Silver is quoted at 2s 6§d. RED CROSS SOCIETY. Received June 18, 1.39 p.m. LONDON, June 18. At the final sitting of the Red Cross Society Conference, Turkey lodged a strong'objection to the Red Cross symbol, and pleaded for the substitution of a red orescent for relief work amongst Musselmans. The Conference refused the request. DEFECTIVE LYDDITE SHELLS. Received June 18, 1.39 p.m. LONDON. June 17. , The War Office is investigating the reported disquieting defects of the steel casing of lyddite shells. Many thousands issued are being examined.
