In an editorial in reference to the checking of luggage, the Lyttelton Times says: —"There is no excuse for railway officials dumping baggage promiscuously oil to the station platform and allowing all and sundry to handle it. Luggage, whether checked or not, ought to be placed in charge of a porter, and given only to persons who claim it by name scription. People who do not take the trouble to" label their packages should be made to wait until the labelled luggage is delivered. The system would involve a little extra expense, perhaps, but it would obviate the disgraceful scenes that occur on big stations during the busy season. The department, too, ought to make some effort to co-operate with the shipping companies for ' the institution of a thorough checking system. It does not seem to occur to either companies or department that the introduction of a sensible system would save them; a great deal of unnecessary trouble and would add immensely to the comfort and convenience of the travelling public."
