THE WELLINGTON DOCK.

Preliminary preparations are now well under way by Messrs John M'Lean and Sons for the construction of the Harbour Board's dock for Wellington. Two "vessels havC-loaded ironbark at Port Stephens' andiClarence Town, New South Wales, and are expected with their big loads within the next fortnight. A third ship is to follow. The ironbark will be used for piles and staging, and as soon as the logs are' unloaded the work of construction will begin. The gear, which will include four steam cranes and two concrete mixers, has been ,ordered in England. The mixers will have a capacity of 20Q-yards of concrete per day of eight hours.. The cement, of which over 100,000 barrels will be required, will be supplied from the Wilson , Works (Auckland), and Messrs Pitcaithley and Co. are to supply some 84,000 yards of washed gravel and sand. On the site for the dock, which is situated on the water-front between the Te Aro Railway Station a#d the destructor, offices, blacksmiths' shops and stores have been erected. A start is now being made upon the erection of a monster bin, in which is to be stored 1-, 000. yards of shingle. This is to be carried by elevaibrs.to a height of &20 feet, so that when the gravel is required for the mixers it will feed Itself automatically. It is anticipated that there will be plenty of labour available when the contractors start upon the actual construction of the dock.
