NEW TECHNICAL SCHOOL.

DEPUTATION WAIT ON THE COUNTY COUNCIL. A deputation, consisting of tho Mayor (Mr J. M. Coradine), and Messrs M. C. O'Connell and W. H. JacksoV waited on the Masterton County Council, yesterday afternoon, with reference to the erection of the proposed Seddon Memorial Technical School in Masterton. Tho deputation pointed uut the disadvantages under which technical education had been carried out in Masterton in the past, and stated that a new school was badly needed. The Committee hoped to raise about £I,OOO for a new school, and already about £6OO had been publicly subscribed for the erection of a new schpol in. brick. • The Council was asked to -subscribe to the fund, as the school was not only for the benefit of the children living in the town but for those living in the country- Mr Coradine said he need not point out that the Council had power to legally contribute to the fund.

The Chairman (Cr Cockburn-Hood) stated that the Council had no power to make any grant. However, the Council did not wish to seethe deputation go away empty-handed, and the Councillors, as private individuals, had subscribed the sum of £24 ss, which he had pleasure in handing to the deputation. Mr Jackson read Clause 185 of the Education Act ' Amendment Act, which provided, inter alia, that any local governing body could make a grant for the purposes of education.' The deputation, however, did not press the point. They thanked the Councillor for their donation and withdrew, Mr Jackson adding that if the Council found, from legal opinion, that they had power to make a grant, the deputation would ask permission to wait on them a*, a future meeting.
