MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
—+, GAS AND FINANCE COMMITTEE. A meeting of the Gas and Finance Committee of the Masterton Borough Council was held, last evening, there being present:—Crs Temple (chairman), Ewington, Yarr and Elliott. The Gas Manager reported that the laying of the three-inch main in Hogg Crescent, and the extension of the existing one-and-a-quarter-inch main in Wrigley. Street to Villa Street—a distance of 10 chains 50 feet —had been completed. Street lamps could be erected in Hogg Crescent, Renall Street and at the corner of Villa Street and Wrigley Streets as soon as the Council directed. The mains for the extension of the gas to Essex and Cole Streets had come to hand, and the work could be proceeded with at once, but for the fact that the roads aro not yet out of the hands of the contractors. This was unfortunate, psa number of householders were waiting to be supplied with gas and the department was losing business. The plant was in good order, but it would be necessary to replace six retorts in the No. 1 bed during the coming summer, and the Manager recommended that an order be placed for the new retorts. The Manager, in conclusion, asked the CommitteeXto decide as soon as possible the question of replacing the> present scrubber and washer. ,
The following motions were carried:—(l) That the work of mainlaying in Essex, Cole and Pownall Streets begone on with as soon as the streets are taken over; (2) that the Works Committee be recommended to proceed with the erection of the street lamps in Hogg Crescent. Renall Street, and the corner of Wrigley Street and Villa Street; (3) that the retorts be ordered as recommended by the Manager of the Gasworks; (4) that the yard office be shifted to make a temporary valve room at the Gasworks; (5) that the tender of McElwain and Andrew, at 17s per chain for pipelaying to the hospital, be accepted; (6) that the Chairman and Crs Elliott and Ewington be empowered to make necessary alterations to the Municipal offices at a cost not to exceed £ls. Accounts am6unting to £720 15s 4d were passed for payment.
