AMATEUR OPERATIC SOCIETY.
A meeting was held in the Y.M.C.A. Rooms, on Friday evening, in connection with the formation of an Amateur Operatic Society in Masterton. Dr. Ross presided. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs A. R. Bunny, J. Payton, J. M. Coradine, A. C. Major, A. Keisenberg, W. R. Rawson and H. Holmes (Matahiwi), all of whom regretted their inability to attend, and promised the Society their support. It was decided that an Amateur Operatic Society be formed, with the object of producing grand opera in Masterton. An annual subscription of five shillings was agreed upon to cover the cost of music and hire of room for rehearsals. Balfe's popular opera, "The Bohemian Girl," was chosen for the first performance. Officers were elected as follow :-- President, Mr A. W. Hogg, M.H.R.; Vice-Presidents, Dr. Ross and Mr P. L. Hollings; Secretary, Mr N. F. Kagar; Conductor, Mr S. Earce. It was considered by those present that the Society should have a successful career, as promises of support have already been made by several prominent residents.
