SUPREME COURT SESSIONS.

By Telegraph—Press Association. TIMARU, June 4. At the Supreme Court, to-day, the Grand Jury found true bills in three cases presented and two trials were completed. In one case Henry Clifford was convicted of the theft of a swag, and having three previous convictions against him, was sentenced to six months' hard labour. In a case of forgery and uttering at Methven an alibi was proved, and the prisoner was discharged. A c.se of assault with intent remains to be dealt with, and the next case to be taken will be a motion for attachment against thirteen Pareora slaughtermen's assistants for nonpayment of the fines for striking. This case will be defended. INVERCARGILL, June 4. The Supreme Court opened, this morning. Mr Justice Chapman said he was very pleased to be able to congratulate the Grand Jury on the absence of crime from this large and growing district. The calendar was an exceedingly small one, and seemed to him, in comparison with former times, to show a diminution. In proportion of population it was compartively insignificant. There were only three caees—one of alleged cattle stealing, one of sending a threatening letter, and one of false registration of birth.
