SCULLING.
G. TOWNS AND BARRY. By Telegraph—Press Association. LONDON, May 31. The trustees of the Sportsman's Cup have agreed that George Towns has forfeited the trophy in not complying with the conditions with respect to Barry's challenge. The trustees request the return of the Cup. (George Towns' reply to Barry, as cabled, was that he could not go to England till next year). Received June 2, 5.20 p.m. SYDNEY, June 2. Towns states that the action of the trustees upsets the whole arrangements for the visit of himself and his brother to England. Tom Sullivan, who has the custody of the Cup, can hand it over, if he likes; but if the trustees demand that he forfeit the trophy, neither he nor his brother would ever attempt to regain it. He had never received a challenge for the cup since he left England in 1902. He believes that the trustees are annoyed, because of a message received in England purporting to come from him, stipulating that a race should be arranged for his brother Charlie for the championship of the world, when he (George) went to row for the cup. , Recaived June 2, 5.20 p.m. , SYDNEY, June 2.
George Towns is annoyed an the action of the Sportsman Cup Trustees, and declared he was never properly notified of Barry's challenge either by the trustees or the challenger. His knowledge of it was obtained from the newspapers, and he had cabled Home practically accepting the challenge for next year. He has also written to Barry explaining the position. Had it not been for the race between Charlie Towns arid Webb, of New Zealand, George Towns would have gone Home straight away.
