MAURICEVILLE COUNTY COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of I,ho Council was held on Saturday last. There were present—Crs H. J. Dagg (chairman), C. Churchill Jackson, C. At Wall and F. W, H. Kummer. The Secretary ofj the Wairarapa Employers' Association forwarded for signatures copies of petitions in reference to the weekly half-holiday. It was decided to hold them over for consideration at next meeting. The Clutha County Council forwarded a copy of resolutions in favour of local bodies making their own land valuations. It \v,u; decided to hand the resolutions to thu Council's delegate at the approaching Conp ference of the New Zealand Counties' r Association. The Valuer-General, in reply to inquiry, intimated that the revised Valuation Rolls will probably be ready about the end of Juno. The Secretary of the Nov, Zealand Counties' Association notified the Council of the Conference to be held in Wellington, beginning on July 9th. It was resolved to appoint the County Chairman (Mr F. W. H. Kummei) as the Council's delegate at the Conference. The Southland County Council forwarded a copy of the resolution approving of the Model By-law Bill, but suggesting an alteration in the proposed mode of publishing the Bylaw. This was considered a matter that should be dealt with at the Conference. The Inspector reported that much injury had been done to the road by the recent rains, involving heavy expenses in repairs. Most of the roads , had now been opened for wheel traffic, but a lot of work stall remained to be done. It was resolved to procure timber for a large culvert at the wash-out on Mangaoronga Road, and some new timber for the bridge on Tollgate Road. Mr T. A. Weston attended the meeting and stated that the surveyors were now laying off the roads in the Maori Reserve at Hastvvell; that the present formed road deviates from the legal road line, and urged that the present opportunity should be taken advantage of to get the deviation legalised. This the Council unanimously approved, and appointed Mr Weston to convey its request to the surveyors. Accounts amounting to £244 5s Id Were passed for payment.
