,:« : 1 . (From Our Own Correspondent.) LONDON, April 19. Under date April 12th the Colonial Consignment and Distributing Co., Ltd., report: — The quantity of meat passedithrough Smithfield last week showed a considerable decline, partly accounted for by the Monday being a holiday. The trade this week is moderately good, and as supplies are not being overdone prices are being maintained. English and Scotch sides of beef have movedjislightlyjn favour of sellers. The supplies, of chilled beef from both North and South America have been comparatively light, and this has not only enabled better prices to be made but has created a brisk demand for good quality frozen beef. North |American hinds are making 5d to s|d per lb and fores 3Jd to 3|d per lb, while South American beef is selling at 4d to 4Jd per lb for hinds and about 3d a lb for fores. Mutton meets a steady demand, and is rather dearer. Good small Scotch sheep are making up to 8d per lb. Home-bred lambs are coming into request, and are Eelling up to lid per lb. New Zealand Mutton.— There has been no arrival during-the week, but stocks are fully adequate to meet all likely requirements. There has been a slight improvement in the demand, probably stimulated by the little lower range of values now being accepted. The best light Canterburys are worth up to 4id per lb, and other weights range from that figure down to 3|d per lb for heavies. - slands are slightly weaker. Good light sheep are still selling at 31d, but medium'weights of good quality can be bought at 3§d per lb, and heavy carcases at 3Jd per lb. South American Mutton.—Arrivals have been, Highland Chief 25,721 carcases, Southern Cross 36,964 carcases, and La Blanca 7,773 carcases. The London market is distinctly lower, and the quotationfnow ranges from 3£d to 3Jd per lb. At these figures it is rather under Provincial values, where an average of about 3|d per. lb is being made. An improvement in the demand has been experienced on most markets. Australian Mutton.—There has been no addition to stocks during the week. A fair numher are still being offered and good quality can be purchased at 3|d per lb, while ordinary carcases are not worth more than 3£d per lb. New Zealand Lambs.— Stocks are very heavy, but have not been increased during the week. These lambs are going into consumption very rapidly, and are still worth more money in store than on the market. Heavy carcases still command the most money, up to 6Jd per lb for Canterburys, while light lambs of the same brands can be bought at s|d to sjd per lb.- North Islands are | selling freely at 4£d to 5d per lb, and attract attention by the difference in price. Australian Lambs.—There are nd 1 arrivals to be reported. Stocks in J store are being rapidly reduced, and I prices are stiffening. Good quality lamb are now making 4Jd per lb, | while 4§d is the lowest price accepted i for inferior brands. \

Frozen Beef.—Receipts consist of 62,571 quarters from South America. A temporary shortage of chilled beef created a brisk demand for frozen bee£of.good quality, which enabled large: quantities to be moved, but without any advance in prices. New Zealand quotations remain at 3|d per lb for hinds; and 2|d per lb for fores, and South American beef is firm at 3d to 3Jd per lb for hinds, and 2Jd to 2§d per lb for fores. ,
