FARMERS' UNION CONFERENCE.

WELLINGTON, May 28,

At the Farmers' Union Conference, • to-day, Mr Niggie (Wanganui) moved —"That no Land Bill will meet with the approval of this Union that does not contain the right to procure the :fre«flfcld." The motion was carried • unanimously. « Captain Hewett (Palmerston North) moved—"That the Conference urge the Executive to maintain a steady pressure against the proposed jflLand Bill especially as to fixing hard fast limits on the farming industry." He claimed that the principle involve in the limitation of area was wrong. Mr Moore (Makuri) said he believed that the State was impoverished by the land being held in wide areas. Mr Crabhe (Kimbolton) moved an amendment—"That this Conference, while considering the Government's land proposals crude and unworkable, is not opposed to the principle of limitation of area." . Mr W. J. Birch, a member of the Executive, said that he would be •quite willing to support the amendment if Mr Crabbe \ added the words, "under some equitable system." This suggestion was adopted, and the amendment carried by 26 votes to 6.
