MASTERTON COLLEGE.

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —Some years ago, when I stood I for a seat—as the Irishman would ' say—on the Masterton Trust Lands Trust, I wrote some letters bearing upon higher education in Masterton, and advocating the expenditure of the Trust moneys in this direction. My powers were not sufficiently persuasive at the time, and the Masterton public turned a deaf ear to my suggestion. Now, apparently, times have changed, Masterton has advanced, and people are recognizing that an institution providing for higher education in our midst will be an advantage to the town. Now that the election of Trustees is at hand, let me commend the to the aspirants and the public, and let me ask the latter to return only such men who will undertake to further the education cause to such an extent that those who cannot afford the expense of sending their children away from Masterton for higher education than can be obtained in Masterton, shall have the means of getting it here. < The only way that this can be done lis to prevent the Trust funds from being frittered away as at present, viz., a little here and a little there. The course pursued in the past may be a popular one, but it is not the one which will benefit the people at large in the future. Let the Trustees have more backbone, and set aside the greater part ( of their funds for one cause, and one institution—and that a col'ege for the education of those who cannot afford to be sent I away to other colleges. The funds are ■ those of the people of Masterton, and they were bequeathed to them for educational purposes. The Trustees are the elected of the people, and they should have no difficilty in formulating a scheme. —Yours, etc., W. G. BEARD.
