"A FUTURE SLOAN." (From Our London Correspondent). LONDON, April 2. Yesterday was a red letter day for New Zealand as represented by the champion jockey from "down under." Hewitt's success last week at Liverpool on Rarer Sort was an unexpected blow to those who bet at starting price, but there' was strong evidence of Devil Bird being backed at the post yesterday for the South Western Two-year-old Plate, which he won by five lengths. Hewitt had during the day the capital average of two mounts, two wins. In the opinion of those who should know, the workmanship on Rarer Sort last week, and on Devil Bird and Nightfall yesterday proclaims him a master of the art of race riding, and promise a career as sensational as that of Sloan. His first victory yesterday was the Southwestern Two-year-old Selling Plate, of 103 sovs; winner to be sold for £100; 4 furlongs on the straight course. In the settling down Devil Bird on the outside cut out the work from Tehee, Wilferton and Print filly, with Limonite colt next, and Lady Dale filly rjext. Then Tehee and Wilferton gave way, and Lady Dale filly became second, but had no chance of catching Devil Bird, who won all the way"by five lengths. Liinonite colt°was fourth, Epitaph filly fifth, Lady Lincoln sixth, Grey Cat seventh, and Laurinus last. . The winner was bought in for 510 guineas. His second victory was the Queen's Prize, Handicap, of 1,000 sovs; second receives 75 sovs; and th 3 third 25 sovs; 1£ mile on the round'course. On settling down Lischana made play from Nightfall and Norman Mint, with Cadwal, Bridge of Canny and Radium next, and Beattie last, behind Hongkong. Nightfall lost her place, and Norman Mint and Radium, became second and third to Lischana. Six furlongs from home Nightfall raced through again, and went on closely pursued by Lischana, Norman Mint and Radium, with Bridge of Canny and Cadwal at their heels. Coming into the straight Lischana and Norman Mint were in trouble, and Radium joined Nightfall, with Bridge of Canny boxed in on the rails, and Cadwal on the outside, and about 100 yards from home Bridge of Canny, getting an closed with Nightfal', while Cadwal, was making up ground on the stand side, and getting on terms a few strides from home, Bridge of Canny, with a supreme effort, pulled an exciting race out of the fire by a neck, Cadwal only being beaten by a head for second place. LONDON, April 5.

At Windsor the day before yesterday Hewitt was again successful on George Edwarde's Rarer Sort in the Slough Maiden Plate, of 103 sovs. He also came in third in the Holyport Selling Handicap, of 102 sovs, on Major Edwardes' Shy Lad, and he rode Mr J. Bue'nnan's Passing By in the Speedy Two year-old Plate, of 200 sovs. WAIRARAPA HACK GUINEAS. Nominations for the Wairarapa Hack Guineas, to be run at the Tara-tahi-Carterton Club's meeting-in November, 1908, will close with the secretary, Mr J. B. Bairstow, Carterton, on Monday, May 27th.

The Taratahi-Carterton Racing Club have decided to again make application to the Racing Conference for permission to hold a second meeting in the year.
