HIDDEN AMMUNITION.

It is now thought that the 35,000 rifle and revolver cartridges of German make which were found in such mysterious circumstances at Sunderland were meant for the revolutionaries in Russia, says the London Daily Mail. Daniel Currie, the man who is in custody in connection with the affair, is about 40 years of age. He is a well-known Socialist, and returned to Sunderland five years ago after a lengthy absence. In December last Currie called on a Mr Graham, a printer occupying premises in King Street, which were formerly a dwelling-house He was accompanied by a foreigner who was either a German or Russian. Currie and his companion entered into negotiations for a ground floor room, about eight feet square, which the foreigner said he wanted for storing mechanical toys. On Easter Monday night Graham waa told by the police that a quantity of cartridges which had been stored on his premises had been seized. He then for the first time learnt that Currie had vacated the store room. It appears that about mid-day on the Monday Currie had come to arrangements with a man named Hutchinson, who also lives in King Street, for the use of a room for storage and with the assistance of Hutchinson's son had moved the twelve boxes containing the supposed toys on a hand-cart. The same evening Hutchinson was examining the strongly fastened cases and became suspicious of their weight, with the result that the police were called in, and the boxes were each found to contain 2,500 rifle cartridges. Currie was arrested and charged with their theft. On the following day his house and the Villers Street Institute, where he was caretaker, were searched, and a further 5,000 , cartridges were found under the In-' stitute platform. I
