MR DEAKIN ON LABOUR.

AN EXPLANATION. Received May 22, 7.58 a.m. LONDON, May 11. In connection with the meeting on May 16th between Mr Deakin and Industrial Companies and Capitalists, who asked for reassurances upon a number of points respecting economic and political conditions in Australia, the chairman of the meeting in a letter to the Press, states that Mr Deakin merely replied to questions. After dealing with the resources and development of Austra'ia, Mr Deakin was asked respecting the possibility of the Labour Party obtaining majorities in the State Legislatures. He descriminated between the Australian Labour Party and similar parties in the Old World, distinguishing between the moderate and the extreme wings. The chairman's letter adds:—Recognising that investors were apprehensive lest Labour should obtain a majority in every State and should legislate accordingly, Mr Deakin examined the position of each State, explaining that if Labour stood alone it would be unable to secure a majority in any State, certainly not in both branches of the local legislature. Mr Deakin assured investors that there was not the faintest reason for apprehension that they would be treated with any injustice in Australia.

The meeting was private, and was reported, as cabled, by one newspaper only.
