HOCKEY.

The ladies' matches in connection with the Hughes Shield Competition for to-morruw are as follow:—High' School v. Huia, on Schoolgrounds, 3.30 p.m.; referee, Mr Richards. Garry Owen v. Featherston, at Lansdowne, 1.15 p.m.; referee, Mr King. Greytown v. Carterton, at Carterton; referee, Mr J. Fisher. Matches are being arranged between several Masterton and Wellington clubs (men's and ladies) for Prince of Wales' Birthday. The Kia Kaha Ciub will play the Wellington Uniteds, Glengarry will play St. John's Club, and Huia will.meet the Wellington-Club. The Garry Owen team will probably visit Pahiatua. The Council of the New Zealand Hockey Association, after considering the question off holding a North v. South Island match, have unanimously decided that that fixture does not produce the competition which it was intended to produce, and they have decided to abandon it. In its place, however, it'is proposed to offer a shield, of the' value of £SO or upwards, for competition amongst provincial teams on the same lines as the New Zealand Rugby Union's Ranfurly Shield. If the affiliated associations agree to the proposal, it will be offered for competition during the present season. The New Zealand Association has granted £2O towards the cost of the shield, and it has been decided to ask each of the four centres, viz., Auckland, WelHington, Canterbury and Otago, to donate the sum of £5 each, leaving the smaller associations to make up the balance.

A meeting will be held in the Y.M.C.A. Rooms, at 8 o'clock, this evening, to consider' the formation of a Saturday Hockey Club. A large amount of support has been promised to the new club. Arrangements for forming the club are well in hand. Tfce drafting of rules will be discussed at the meeting. A local firm has already donated a hockey stick for competition among the members. The following will represent Kia Kaha against Knox Church, at Lansdowne, to - morrow : Truscott, Thynne, Gordon, Anderson, Donald, McLean, King, Williams, Hughes, Rue and Nixon. ; The. fallowing will represent the W.F.C.A.. in their match with United, at Lansdowne, on Thursday: —G. Bush, A. Fleming, C. Smith, H. Richards, CI Fairbrother, G. Scrimgeour, iH. Whitt; C. Peterser, A. Pragnell, W, Minett and J. La Roche. The following referees have been appointed for to-moi iow's matches: Carterton A v. Cauercon B, Mr D. C. Humphrey; Kia Kaha v. Kncx, Mr W. J. Vernon; W.F.C.A. v. United, Mr J. O'Meara.
