LONDON MARKETS.

The Department of Industries and Commerce have received the following cable from the High Commissioner, dated London, May 18th:— The mutton market Jis quiet, and there is a poor local demand, except for prime light weights, of which a great scarcity exists. Canterbury mutton is quoted at 4d, and North Island 33d. There is a large supply of ewes on the market, averaging 2Jd. River Plate mutton is in large supply, and is being strongly pushed for sale. The average price of this mutton is 3Jd. There is a good demand for all lamb with more enquiry for forward delivery. Canterbury brands are realising 5Jd; other brands 5Jd. Stocks of New Zealand beef on hand are light, and the market is firm. The present quotations are 3§d, and 3£d for hind and forequarters, respectively. The butter market is steady for fine quality, but lifeless for ordinary classes. Siberian supplies are increasing, and are quoted at 90s. The average price of choice New Zealand butter is 995, and Danish 105s. The cheese market is firm, and there is a good demand for New Zealand cheese a 66s for white, and 64s for coloured. A small shipment of Canadian cheese has been delayed on account of the strike. Ihe hemp market is' quiet, with only small business doing. Good fair grade on, the spot is quoted at £35, May and July shipments £34, fair grade on the spot £3O 10s. The cocksfoot seed market is quiet, but firm, and there is no pressure to sell. Seventeen pound bright dressed seed is quoted at 545. The wheat market is very much stronger. Oats are firm with a hardening tendency, and peas are firm, but the demand is only moderate.
