WOOLWICH ARSENAL EMPLOYEES.
Received May 20, 10.41 p.m. LONDON, May 20. King Edward's reply to the petition as sent through Mr Herbert Gladstone, was read at a mass meeting of employees at Woolwich Arsenal, His Majesty expressed grief at the distress arising out of the unemployment of the men and was confident that no man would be discharged whose labour could be profitably utilised in the public service. Everything would be done to mitigate the unavoidable hardships referred to in the petition, which he had forwarded to Mr R. B. Haldane with an expression of personal wishes to that effect. The reply was received with cheers, but Mr Haldane's name was received with groans. The meeting passed a resolution in favour of summoning Parliament with a view to stopping the discharges of men at the Woolwich Arsenal.
