THE EDALJI CATTLE-MAIMING CASE.
SELECT COMMITTEE'S REPORT,
Received May 19, 5.8 p.m. LONDON, May 18,
Thc Select Committee appointed to investigate the case of Edalji, convicted of cattle-maiming at ..Great Wyrley, have presented their report. The Committee finds that Edalji's conviction is unsatisfactory "and that, apart from the letters which he wrote in 1903, and by which he partly brought the trouble £ upon himself, there was not sufficient evidence to establish his guilt. The committee are of opinion that he was not entitled to a free pardon, but think that the case might properly be considered an exceptional matter. Mr Herbert Gladstone, Secretary of State Home Department, says that he feels that the case is an exceptional one; that he might give weight to the committee's opinion, and that the permanent disqualifications following upon Edalji's conviction might be removed. He will advise King Edward as an act of clemency to grant a free pardon, but says that it is not a case for compensation.
