MASTERTON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

The monthly meeting of the Council of the x Masterton Chamber of Commerce was held in Messrs Abraham and Williams' Farmers' Room, yesterday afternoon. There were present—-Messrs J. D. Cruickshank (chairman), G. C. Summerell, D. Donald, B. J. Dolah, T. G. Mason and H. C. Robinson. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs M. Caselbwg, W. B. Chennells, and J. B. Keith. A letter was received from the Secretary of the Decimal Association, London, stating that the Association had at last got a chance of a debate for its Metric Weights and Measures Bill, and had had the second reading fixed. The Bill was well-backed, but the time available for discussion was very limited —only one afternoon —so it might be sent to a committee. The Association asked the Masterton Chamber to exert any influence it might possess, through its correspondence in England, to secure support for the Bill.-—The letter was received, members being of opinion that the pound a year voted to the funds of the Association was quite sufficient support from the Ma3ter-* ton Chamber. The Secretary of the New Zealand International Exhibition wrote, in reply to a letter from the Chamber, Stating that exhibits in the Home Industries section would be packed and forwarded through the New Zealand Carrying Company. The letter further stated that the award certificates were in the hands of the printer, ■and would be forwarded in due course to those entitled to them. The Secretary reported, that he »had replied to their communication asking if the exhibits would be • forwarded to exhibitors or to himself as local secretary. He further stated in his letter that some local exhibitors had had to pay the freight on their exhibits to the Exhibition, contrary to the regulations, and also that they had not received any schedules nor had winners been advised ( of results. The only way they had learned of their success was through the Chriatchurch papers. No exhibits had yet been returned to Masterton. To this letter the Secretary of the Chamber of Commerce received a reply informing him that exhibits would Jbe returned to the owners who would be duly notified of their despatch. No reply was received to the other statements made by Mr Boddington in his letter. The meeting decided to luave the matter in the hands of the Secretary. The Department of Agriculture forwarded an extract from the New Zealand Gazette of April 18th containing the new regulations, that are to come into force on September 2nd liext, governing the grading and export of phormium fibre.
