MR HOGG AND THE STATE COAL.
(To the Editor.)
Sir,—A paragraph appeared in your issue of the 14th instant in reference to a letter addressed by Mr Hogg, M.H R., to the Borough Council, re a test of State coal, in which it is announced that he stated that the State coal is neither good for making gas nor household purposes. Surely Mr Hogg is misrepresented? I have gone to about twenty people to-day who are now using the coal in uuestion who declare it to be first-class for household purposes. If Mr Hogg is not misrepnaanted it would seem that he, also, wishes to throw a dish of cold water upon the establishment of a State coal depot in Masterton. This I can hardly believe to be true.—l am, etc., JOHN MACKAY. Masterton, May 16th, 1907. (The parargaph to which Mr Mackay refers was quite correct, as will be seen from the following copy of the letter sent by Mr Hogg to the Borough Council.—Ed. W.A.) "STATE COAL. Masterton, May 7th. Mr R. BROWN, Town Clerk, Dear Sir,—l have forwarded your communication in reference to improved facilities for the disposal of State coal in Masterton to the Minister of Mines. On enquiry I learn that State coal has been found to be unsuitable for gas-making and as the result of a good trial I find that the coal that is being sold at the Masterton gasworks is quite unsuitable for household purposes.— Yours very truly, (Signed) A. W. HOGG."
