Received May lly 9.7 a.m. LONDON, May 14. ■ Lord Ripon, Lord Privy Seal, in reply to Lord Lattsdowne, who was Minister for Foreign Affairs in the Balfour Government, said the | Government considered the appointment of a Select Committee to reform the House of Lords inopportune, hence.it was not. intended to participate in the proceedings of the committee.
1 WOMEN ON LOCAL BODIES. * Received May 16, 7.37 sum. LONDON, May 14. Mr John Burns, President of the Local Government Board, announced in the House of Commons that he had intended to introduce in the Commons a Bill qualifying women for election to County or Borough Councils, but he had now arranged that it be introduced forthwith in the House of Lords. (Ironical cheers.)
NEW HEBRIDES CONVENTION. Received. May 16, 12.5 a.m. LONDON, May 15. Mr Winston Churchill, in reply to a question in the House of Commons regarding the recruiting of labourers under the New Hebrides Convention, said the Government was considering whether the licenses issued to' British vessels should not prohibit the recruiting of females for service outside the group.
