POSEIDON GOLDFIELDS.
a report to the Victorian Secretary fqr Mines which has been made by Mr!' A. M. Howitt, of the geological survey branch, that officer points out again the possibility of further discoveries of big nuggets in the neighbourhood of the Poseidon rusfr. He deals particularly with somet of the geological features near the head of Ironbark Gully, threequarters of a mile south of Tarnagulla. Tikis is the spot where a miner on July 16th, 1889, found the Magnum Bonum nugget, of 4580z, the largest discovered about Tarnagulla till within the last four months at the Poseidon rush. A nugget of 180 oz was found in 1859, and one of 108oz at a date not mentioned. As usual with big nuggets about here, the Magnum Bonum was found at a shallow depth, 'the sinking being only 4ft s 6in. Ib is a country in which a cross reef, which yielded ljoz to the ton, was worked to a basic dyke 3ft >vide, running north and south. This example of a cross reef related to a dyke (Mr Howitt says) may occur at other points, and any gullies to the north and south, where this line of dyke occurs, would be worth prospecting. The large nuggets, he thinks, have probably been shed from rich veins crossing indicators.
