MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

MEETING OF WORKS COM- | MITTEE. ! A meeting of the Masterton Borough Works, Drainage and Abattoir Committee was held last evening. There were present Crs J. H. Pauling (in the chair), A. Haughey, W. Pragnell, J. Prentice and the Mayor (Mr J. M. Coradine). An apology for absence was received from Cr W. Morri3. A sub-committee, consisting of Crs Pauling and Pragnell, reported having interviewed Mr B. Brodie in reference to cleaning out Makora Creek where it runs through his property. Mr Brodie agreed to allow the work to oe carried out provided the Council indemnifies him against the loosening of the piles, and the the building. The committee recommended that the ofler be accepted, and that the work be carried out. The Committee decided to advise the Council that they had no recommendation to make in reference to the widening of Chapel Street South. A letter was received from Mr T. G. Mason in connection with the widening of Makora Street. — The Engineer was instructed to go fully into the matter and report to the next meeting on what work is required to be done, and the estimated cost. The Committee decided to report to the Council that they have had several offers of land for a site for Corporation yards, and to n commend the Council to negotiate for acquiring one of these sites. A sub-committee reported that they had visited Mr T. Knight's residence with the intention of interviewing him in connection with the w f dfening of Bentley Street, but they had been unable to see him. — The Town Clerk was instructed to write to Mr Knight asking him to state definitely what work is required to be done. A deputation, consisting of Messrs 0. JSL C. Pragnell, G. Hyde, Varnham, Whitton, A. J. Parton and others, waited on the Committee in reference to the state of Cornwall Street, and urged the necessity of forming footpaths and laying down the sewerage. They presented a petition containing sixteen signatures, asking that something might be done in the fatter. The Committee recommended that the work of forming and gravelling a footpath, 10 feet wide on one side of the street at a cost of about £IOO, be "included in the current year's estimates, and that the Engineer be instructed to put the work in hand as soon as possible. A sufc»:ommitte3 reported having interiewed owners of land abutting on the Kuripuni Creek with a view to straightening the stream at the junction .of Columbo Road and Kuripuni Street. They stated that Mr E, Jones objected to the work being done.—lt was decided to recommencf that a temporary culvert be put in where the creek now runs a£ a cost of about £2O, and that owners of land abutting on the creek be called upon to clean out the creek. A letter was received from Mr A. Annan, calling attention to a danger of the Waipoua River breaking into the town unless some protective works were placed at the back of the Renall Estate land.—The Town Clerk was directed to interview Mr J. B. Keith (acting for the Renall Estate Trustees) on the matter, and report to the next meeting. It was decided to 'recommend the Engineer to coniplete the Johnston Street work by day labour. It was also decided to form Donald Street from Mr Rawson's residence to Vivian Street, and then call tenders for gravelling that portion of the street. The Committee decided to recommend that the Engineer be instructed to lay pipes from the spring oh the Council's property at the Abattoir to the well for the present use, and that the taking up of the £7OO loan for installing the high pressure water supply at the Abattoir be left in abeyance until the natural sources have been thoroughly investigated. The Engineer was directed to have a alterations made to the exhaust pipe and pump to prevent oil draining into the well at the Abattoir. A report from the Inspector with reference to drainage at the Corporation stables was held over until the estimates have been framed. It was decided to put barriers in Hessejr Street to compel horse and vehicular traffic to keep on the metal, and also to gravel the footpath on the eastern side of the road. It was resolved to instruct the Inspector to prosecute nil persons who ridfe or drive on in the Borough. Wages sheets amounting to £133 8s 5d and £43 19s, respectively, were examined and signed by the Chairman. The Committee further considered the estimates and decided to meet again on Tuesday neict.
