TURNIP-GROWING COMPETITION.

JUDGES' AWARD. At the meeting ol the Masterro.i -A. and P. Association on Saturday, .•Mr J. Morris who, with Mr R. J. Dagg, judged the turnip plots (class 338) in connection with the Association's field competition, annou".c-d the result of the.competition as follows : McGregor Bros: First plot (Bft x Bft), bulbs 941b, tops 261b; -second plot (Bft x Bft), bulbs 1291b, tops lbib; total. 2651b; per acre, 40 tons 5 cwt. 221b; 1. Bland Rayner: First plot, (Bft x Bft), bulbs 781b, tops 141b; second plot (Bft x Bft), bulbs 1071b, tops 171b; total, 2161b; .per acre, 32 tons 16 cwt lqr 71b; 2. Messrs McGregor Bros, and Bland Rayner's plots were the only two remaining in the competition, as the other two entrants did not compete. In reporting On the judgirg, Mr Morris stated that he considered the method of judging laid down could be greatly improved upon. He considered the plots should be judged on evenness of drilling, quality of drilling and cleanness of ground. The judges should also be allowed to cut samples of. the exhibit. Such a revieon of conditions would, he thought, give satisfaction to competitors, and enable the judges io more expeditiously carry out their work. He would suggest that a committee should be formed lo draft conditions for judging classes 339, 340 ?nd 341. The judges' report was adopted, and they were accorded a vote of thanks; Mr J. McGregor thought that Mr Morris' suggestions should be record- \ ed for the guidance of judges in \ future competitions. \ A committee Was nominated, but ;Mr Lewis stated that as there was a competition in the beginning of June, ■'• fcnd no meeting of the Association Vwould be held before that time, he considered that the present meeting should dyaft a set of rules to govern future competitions. This suggestion met with general - approval, and the following conditions were decided upon for the guidance of judges in field competitions under the auspices of the Association : Weight, per acre 50 points, quality of turnips, swedes or mangolds 25 points, evenness of crop 10 points, > and'culfclvation of ground and/general appearance of crop 15 points; total,
