MASTERTON- WEDNESDAY.

A first offender, a female, was fined ss, in default 24 hours' imprisonment, for having been drunk. Richard Burke, who had pleaded guilty at the sitting of the Court on Monday to a charge of theft of a piece of greenstone, valued at £2, the. property of his employer, a native, named Albert Himona, appeared for sentence. Sergeant Miller stated that the accused had run away from the Stoke Industrial School. The Magistrate, after administering a severe caution, admitted the accused to probation for six months, but ordered him to return to his father in Wellington, plending a situation being procured for him. George Graham, alias ffeta Matahpre, whom the police stated had run away from the Burnham Industrial School, also appeared on remand, he having pleaded guilty at a previous sitting of the Court, on a charge of theft of two sacks of potatoes, the v property of Joseph Arthur, on April 24th. The Magistrate ordered the accused to be sent back to the Burnham Industrial School.

Roy Messenger pleaded guilty to a charge of having ridden a bicycle on the footpath in Albert Street, on April 25th. The defendant was fined ss, with 7s costs. An elderiy Maori woman, named Raima Lane, was charged with having procured liquor on April 29th, during the currency of a prohibition order against her. Accused pleaded not guilty. After hearing the evidence of Sergeant MiJler as to finding the liquor in the accused's kit, and taking it from her, the Magistrate warned the accused and fined her 10s.

A yoath, named Gilbert Langdon, admitted a charge of having thrown a stone and breaking a window in Mr J. K. Blinkhoi'ne's house, at Lansdowne. Sergeant Miller stated that the damage had sinc_- been paid for. The Magistrate severely admonished the defendant, 'and fined him 20s, with 9s costs.

Ernest Sinclair, a young man, appeared, on remand, charged with the theft of various articles, valued at £8 17s, the property cf W. Riddle, of Taueru. Accuted elected not to be dealt with summarily, and was represented by Mr C. A. Pownall.

Sergeant Miller stated that the accused stayed at Riddle's. boardinghouse. Mrs Riddle missed a number of articles, and notified the police. I Constable Gregor, of Masterton, went to Taueru and searched the accused's portmanteau, with the result that a number of articles of clothing were found. Mrs Riddle identified the articles as being those that were missirgfrom the store. When the Constable went out to Taueru the accused ran away. He was, however, arrested the next day,' and told the constable that the articles had air been bought at various places. Elizabeth Riddle, William Riddle, Caroline Taplin and Constable Gregor, gave evidence in support of the charge. I Accused reserved his defence, and was committed for trial at the j next sitting of the District Court, j at Masterton, on May 23rd. Bail was | allowed in one surety of self at £SO, and two others at £SO each. I
