THE LATE MR E. M. SMITH, M.H.R.

NEW PLYMOUTH, April 22

The late Mr E. M. Smith, M.H.R., was buried to-day with full military honours. The funeral was the largest ever seen in Taranaki. The Government and business places were closed from 1 o'clock., The people poured in from the country districts, and it was estimated that close on 10,000 people witnessed the funeral, in which full musters at headquarters of the volunteer companies, cadets, and Garrison Band, and Fire Brigade in ■uniform participated. The pall-bearers were the Acting-Pfemier (Hon. Hall-Jones), Hon. James Carroll, Hon. R. McNab, and Messrs W. J. Jennings, C. E. Maior and J. Symes (Taranak i representatives in the House). A large number of members of both Houses of the Legislature were present. All local bodies were fully represented. The cortege took twenty-five minutes to pass a given point. Some hundreds of telegrams of condolence have been received from all parts of the colony, including a cable from Sir J. G. Ward (London). A large carriage was Utilised to convey dozens of beautiful wreaths.
