A Blue Book published shows that when Lord Elgin was apprised of the letter which Sir J. A. Swettenham was said to have sent to Admiral Davis, after the Kingston earthquake, he cabled him that if the report was correct to withdraw his /statements unreservedly, and express regret, inasmuch as it was a highly improper and unbecoming way 'of addressing an officer of a friendly nation engaged on an errand of mercy. Sir J. A. Swettenham, in reply, forwarded to Lord Elgin Admiral Davis' letter and his reply thereto, showing Kut slight discrepancies with the report that had reached Lord Elgin, and requesting Lord Elgin to forward to Admiral Davis the following communication: "At the instance of the Secretary of State, I desire unreservedly to withdraw my letcer and express my regret." Sir J. A. Swettenham j simultaneously sent in his resignation. | THE WRECK OF THE SUEVIC. Received April Zl, 4.40 p.m. 1 LONDON, April 20. The Board of Trade held an inquiry into the loss of the steamer Suevic. The captain attributed the disaster to a baffling current, and stated that another steamer during the same night was carried eleven miles off her course.
