WELLINGTON RACES. By Telegraph- Press Association. WELLINGTON, April 17. The weather was threatening for the first day of the autumn meeting, but no rain fell. The attendance was below that of former autumn meetings, and could not have exceeded 2,000. The course was in good order, and fair times were registered. The sum of £12,822 was put through the machines as against £12,489 last year. The double machine (Helen Portland and Lady Annie) paid £32 18s. Results:— Hurdles, 1| mile. — Mr Clark's Black Reynard, 9.10, 1; Mr J. H. Prosser's Maui, 11.3, 2; Mr Connop's Rangitoto, 9.0, 3. Also —Assayer, Pawa and Levent, Pawsj and Maui led to the top turn, when Black Reynard came with a "wet sail" and won easily. Time, 3min 14 l-ssec. Dividends, £4 4s and £1 2s. Waiwetu Handicap, 7 furlongs.— Mr Crosse's Grand Slam, 8.5, 1; Mr Fraser's Kurawaka, 6.7, 2; Mr Palmer's Probable, 8.6, 3. Also started Wirral, Royal Blue and Seaman. Wirral md Kurawaka led round the turn into the straight, when Grand Slam put in a late run snd won by a length. Time, lmin 30sec. Dividends, £5 liis and £2 19s.
