CANADA v. NEW ZEALAND.
(From Our London Correspondent). LONDON, February 20. The words of Mr J. A.|Young, of Wanganui, are recalled to me as I read the figures of the emigrants to Canada last year. While speaking highly of the efforts of the High Commissioner and hi 3 able staff to nnalce known and popularise New Zealand, he thought something more might be done, on the lines of Canada, to make emigration to your beautiful country more popular. Undoubtedly the heavy passage money, compared with that to Canada, is the greatest stumbling block —unfortunately a permanent one. The figures may be of interest, and I give them below:— Emigrants from United Kingdom to Canada, 98,257; emigrants from United States to Canada, 63,781; emigrants from the Continent of Europe to Canada, 58,674, a tremendous total of 216,000 souls who flocked to Canada during last year alone, and ol this number nearly half were from the United Kingdom. But Canada has made most strenuous efforts to get population. She has established several emigration offices in the principal parts of the City, and of the large towns. She has flooded the country with illustrated literature, painting in glowing colours the beauties and possibilities of the Dominion. And emigration agents have established themselves in London and several of the larger towns, who give all information, and undertake to find suitable work on arrival; the greatest of these is, of course, the Salvation Army, who have sent out thousands free, relying upon receiving back their expenses from the emigrants when they have settled and begin to earn money. Still I remember the words of Sir John Gorst when he returned from your colony. He was simply charmed with "God's Own Country" and its people. His great regret was that Jie was unable to pass the remainder of his life there.
