RACING.

TURF NOTES. (By Zetland). ; The Wellington Racing Club's Autumn Meeting will open at Trentham, to-morrow, and will be concluded on Saturday; The Wairarapa horses—including Mahuta, Sherlock Holmes, Royal Blue, Merrie Rose, Scotch Reel, Mataari, Moloch, and Full Rate —were sent down yesterday. The most forward of these may be expected to at least run prominently in their engagements. A considerable amount of interest is being j taken by the sporting public in the principal race of the meeting, the Thompson Handicap. Out of sixteen acceptances, there should be at least eleven starters. The race bearsj a very open appearance at present, but followers of recent form may be partial to the chances of Marguerite, Contender, Submarine, Pas Seul, Mahuta and Helen Portland, and should the course be heavy, there will be plenty of support for Mystification, The Lark, and Sherlock Holmes. The Soult mare, Lady Annie, may start a good favourite for the Railway Handicap, in which Medallist and Sunbonnet should also run well. The following are suggested as likely to finish in the front rank in the several events: — First Hurdles.—Pawa and Assayer. Waiwetu Handicap.—Royal Blue and Probable. Silverstream Hack.—Merrie Rose and Gaiety. Thompson Handicap.-Marguerite and Pas Seul. Railway Handicap.—Lady Annie and Medallist. Challenge Stakes.—Achilles. Plunket Nursery.—Gold Crest and O^ton. Tinakori Hack.-Erl King and William. , , , M. McGrath's team at Opaki has bsen increased by the addition of Moloch, Mocassin, Oakley, a two-year-old gelding by The WorkmanReport, and a two-year-old by The Workman—Seal. The Lower Valley Jockey Club s course at Martinborough has lately been ploughed and well top-dressed with sawdust. The officials of the club intend to have the racing track in first-class order for the next annual fixture, and it is confidently expected that the improvements effected will result in good nominations and acceptances. A well-grown two-year-old filly, by Merrie England—Minnie Palmer, has recently been purchased by a Masterton sportsman from Mr James Macara. The filly may make her first appearance under racing colours in the next Wairarapa Guineas.
