Presumably a widow, her love of display causes much gossip; her neighbours have varying opinions of her character, and discuss whether she is a person to be shunned or honoured. A life-like love story is effectively entwined with the more important events of the work, and the result is a romance of entrancing and progressive interest until the denouement.
