The campaign against the Land Bill is shortly to be prosecuted with vigour throughout Canterbury. The funeral of the late Sergeant McArdle will take place to-morrow (Suhday) leaving the Catholic Church at 2.30 p.m. Mr William Henry Eyes, one time Superintendent of Marlborough, died in Wellington, yesterday, aged 88 years. —Association. The funeral of the late Charles Drummond Lennox will take place to-day, leaving the residence of Mr Thos. Wagg, Worksop Road, at 2 o'clock.
Samuel Crawshaw, an Auckland dairyman, Was fined £lO and costs, yesterday, for failing to notify the Dairy Inspector of a diseased cow in his possession,.—Association. A coal combine, with a capital of a million and a quarter sterling, is forming in the principal collieries in East Midlothians, states a London cable.
A Press Association cablegram from Sydney states that Barry has challenged George Towns for the Sculling Championship of England, and it is probable that Towns will accept the challenge.
Before Messrs T. Wagg and Eli Smith, J's.P., at the Masterton Police Court, yesterday morning, Frederick Nelson was sentenced to one month's imprisonment for having been drunk, it being his third offence.
A Press Association telegram from Auckland states that the City Council has approved of the drainage scheme according to the engineer's report. The main outfall is to be at Urukei Point.
, A man named John Carroll was sentenced at Wellington, yesterday, to three months imprisonment, for stealing two pieces of dress stuff, valued at £lO, belonging to a Wellington firm. A Press Association tr.kpram from Wellington states that D. S. McIntyre, late superintendent of awards at the Exhibition, who was suspended in connection v/Un alleged irregularities, left by tl:e Turakina for London, yesterday, under the assumed name of Mack, it is understood that Mclntyre had been under police surveillance sir>ct' coming to Wellington, but, as far as had been ascertained, there was no authority for detaining him.
Slight trouble has arisen at the Gisborne Freezing Works, states a Press Association telegram. There has been some bickering between the unionist and non-unionist men in the fellmongery department, which resulted in a stand-up fight between two men. One of these, held to be the aggressor, was dismissed, he being a union man, whereupon the other union men left work. Their places have been filled, and work in the factory is not interfered with.
An Ashburton Press Association telegram states —At the Magistrate's Court, Mr V. G. Day, S.M., presiding, four sly grog selling cases were h ard. Frederick B. Robinson, with one previous conviction, was sentenced to five weeks' imprisonment. Annie Alexander was. convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon. Samuel Alexander, with three previous convictions, was sentenced to three months' imprisonment. Robert Patterson >was fined £SO and costs.
A Press Association telegram from Carterton states that there was a great function on Thursday night in connection with a double eventlighting of the town clock and the inauguration of the municipal gas works. Several hundred people were in the streets when the Mayoress (Mrs James Brown) performed the ceremony of lighting the town clock. There was a display of gaslight at the same time. Speeches made in Victoria Hall showed that Carterton enjoyed water, drainage, and gas, and was one of the lowest-rated boroughs in the colony.

Mr Imlay Saunders, land and estate agent, Wanganui, advertises particulars of two farms, the areas being 200 acres and 1,129 acres, respectively. These are pronounced to good investments.
In another column Miss F. A. Smith announces that she has purchased the bookseller's and stationer's business lately carried on by Mrs J. Pringle, Queen Street. The stock is of the best and the business will be conducted on the most up-to-date lines.
The reputation of the Whangaimoana Estate, which is to be disposed of by auction in small sections next Thursday, 18th inst., is drawing the attention of landowners throughout the colony. A number from Feilding, Palmerston N. and Dannevirke, were inspecting the property yesterday, and several others propose visit* ing the estate to-day.
