MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
WORKS COMMITTEE.
The ordinary meeting of the Masterton Borough Works Committee was held last evening. There were present:—The Deputy Mayor (Cr E. McEwen), Crs J. H. Pauling, J. Elliott, F. W. Temple, T.-G. Hoar, W. Morris, E. G. Eton and J. C. Ewington.
The Deputy-Mayor and Crs Ewington and Elliott were appointed a committee to sign the borough roll. Mr J. Kavanagh wrote with reference to the widening of Michael Dixon Street. He offered to do the fencing in front of his property provided the Council repaid him within four months. The estimated cost of the work was £24 10s. The matter was referred to the committee that already have the matter of widening the street in hand.
Messrs J. S. Alpass and Co. wrote drawing the Council's attention to the inconvenience to which they had been put by the necessary delay in the construction of a culvert over the Makora Creek in Queen Street. They stated that the takings at their shop had diminishedjby £3 per week during the three months that the work was delayed. They asked the Council to consider the matter of granting compensation for their loss. The letter was received, Cr Eton dissenting.
Messrs G. Gardener and Sons wrote complaining that the Borough poundkeeper had visited their office to collect poundage fees, and had behaved in a unbecoming manner. It was decided to ask the poundkeeper for an explanation of the matter. On the motion of Cr Pauling, seconded by Cr Temple, the Engineer was instructed to continue the widening ofjthe Chapel Street footpath along past the Methodist Church to Hall Street.
The Engineer was instructed to proceed with the formation of Donald and Pownall Streets by day labour.
Mr W. Cole waited on the Council and asked that the seal of the borough be. affixed to the plans for the subdivision of the Cole's Estate. Crs Hoar and Morris were authorised to affix the seal to the plans. It was decided, on the motion of Cr Hoar, to construct a footpath in the south end'of Dixon Street, between Krayne and Princess Streets. The Gas Manager asked to be allowed to place a 4-inch gas main along Renall Street, instead of a 3inrh main, as previouly recommended. He thought that future business in that street would warrant a 4-inch main, and he had already laid that size main along a portion of the street.
Cr Eton moved that a 4-inch main be extended along the whole street as far as Pownall Street. Cr Morris rose to a point of order. He stated that the Council had already decided upon a 3-inch main for Renall Street, and that motion would require rescinding before the present one could be carried. The Deputy-Mayor ruled the motion in order.
The motion was carried by five votes to three votes'. Accounts amounting to £220 14s lid were passed for payment.
