NEW STEAMERS.

By Telegraph—Press Association.

DUNEDIN, April 6. The laying down and the building of four new steamers for the Union Company—the Marama, Maori, Waih'ora, and Komata —together with a tug, were all announced some time ago.. Since then it was mentioned that a fifth new steamer was projected. Recently the company placed two steamers--the Atua and the Navua—in the Island trade, but now it apparently intends to go one better, for the new steamer is to be of 4,000 tons gross register, or 500 tons larger than the Atua. She will also embody many improvements. When the new steamer has been completed she and the Atua will carry out regular monthly trips to various ports in the Tongan, Navigators, and Fijian Islands, while the Navua will run between Auckland and Fiji direct. The new ships will be completed and in commission early next year.
