SOUTH POLAR EXPEDITION.

(From Our London Correspondent.) LONDON, February 16. It is announced that a new British South Polar Expedition will leave this country in October next, under the command of its organizer, Mr E. H. Shackleton, who was third lieutenant in the "Discovery," during the National Antarctic Expedition, and who, with Captain Scott and Dr. Wilson, made the record journey to the "furthest south." On its departure, the expedition will proceed to New Zealand, and thence will go down to the winter quarters of the "Discovery," in latitude 77.50 S. After landing a shore party of explorers, the ship will proceed back to Lyttelcon, and in the following year she will return and pick up the explorers. Similar expeditions are being organised by other nations, and what may be called an international attack will be made upon the south polar regions. On the sledge journey of Captain Scott and his companions, they planted the British flag at the most southern point ever visited, and it will be one of the aims of their successors to carry the Union Jack still further south. A/motor-car, capable of travelling on ice, has been specially provided, and it is thought will be of no small service.
