A PAINFUL INCIDENT.

By Telegraph—Press Association

CHRISTCHURCH, April 5. A most painful incident occurred, this evening, when a young girl, named Eva Williams, 20 years of age, a resident of *-iikman's Road, Papanui, attempted, apparently in a fit of desperation, to drown herself by jumping hito the river from the Victoria Street Bridge. A lady, who was passing at the time, heard the splash, and gave the alarm, and after some difficulty the girl was brought ashore despite her protestations and appeals to be allowed to drown. A doctor was called, and the girl was taken to the Hospital,- where she progressed favourably towards recovery.
